Applications of Starch

Starch derivatives or modified starch is obtained from natural starch through a series of chemical, physical or biological changes. At present, these products obtained from starch have been widely used in food processing fluid, the textile industry, papermaking, adhesives, and flocculants for wastewater treatment. Because of their biodegradability and the universal applicability of starch, they are considered to be green substitutes for polyelectrolytes. Because of the above advantages, the modification of starch has been the focus of research in some industries, and the production of starch derivatives by Chemical Methods is a hot research direction. The modification of natural starch by chemical methods can be summarized as etherification, oxidation, cross-linking, and so on. Among them, the transesterification reaction in etherification reaction is also a popular modification method.

Our Technologies

The process of transesterification is mainly the reaction of the hydroxyl group of starch with another alcohol, acid, or ester to form a new alcohol, acid, or ester. CD BioGlyco has successfully developed several efficient synthesis schemes to carry out the transesterification of starch to prepare starch derivatives.

  • Response conditions
  • Acidic environment, alkaline environment, ionic liquid catalysis, enzyme catalysis, nitrogen heterocyclic derivative catalysis.

  • Structural testing
  • Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared (IR).

  • Starch performance
    • Acid-base titration: Test its degree of substitution.
    • Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA),gel permeation chromatography(GPC), and X-crystal diffraction: Test its thermal properties and crystallinity.

In addition, the starch and starch derivatives synthesized by transesterification are purer and more environmentally friendly.

Applications

  • The starch ester exchange modification service applies to the production of thickeners in foodstuffs.
  • The ester exchange reaction applies to the manufacture of adhesives in the light industry.
  • Ester exchange-modified starch can be applied to the development of electrolytes.
  • In the paper industry, ester-exchanged starch is applied as a binder in the papermaking process.
  • The production of ester-exchanged starch can be applied in the development of flocculants for wastewater treatment.
