Origin of Modified Starch

Processed by physicochemical or other methods, the starch natively extracted from plants is endowed with special properties and becomes the modified starch which overcomes the limitations of native starches and widens the utilization of starch. Depending on the classification of starch raw materials, modified starch can be divided into corn/potato/rice/cassava/wheat/bean and other modified starch types. Depending on the category of modification, modified starch includes physically/chemically/enzymatically/genetically/complexly modified starch types. Modification can alter features of the starch including gelatinization, swelling, solubility, retrogradation and pasting quality, rheological properties, and digestibility.

How to Prepare Modified Starch?

To enhance the physicochemical characteristics of native starch and achieve better results in various formulations, physical, chemical, and biological modifications has reported to prepare modified starch. Physical modification is comparatively safe and preferable over chemical modification, while the latter is commonly carried out in industry due to efficient costs and convenience. Biological modification effectively reduces the yields of byproducts.

Technologies for Modified Starch Manufacture Service

The development and manufacture of modified starch is a complicated process. CD BioGlyco has built a research and development platform to provide customers with better design, production, and optimization solutions for modified starch. We have physical modification, chemical modification, enzymatic modification, and genetical modification services to help customers obtain the products quickly and efficiently, and assist customers in developing unique manufacture processes, meeting the needs and applications of different types of modified starch. We have perfect production lines, producing more than 350,000 tons of modified starch per year, of which more than 200 kinds of corn modified starch.

Physical Modification

Physical Modification

Physical modifications are usually environmentally friendly and safe for industrial production, and include thermal treatment and non-thermal treatment.

Chemical Modification

Chemical Modification

New functional groups will be introduced in starch molecules. Derivatization modification of starch includes esterification, etherification, oxidization, acid hydrolysis, and cross-linking.

Enzymatic Modification

Enzymatic Modification

Enzymatic modifications mainly use hydrolyzing enzymes in starch treatment, showing advantages including fewer byproducts, higher yield, better process control, and more specific hydrolysis products.

Genetical Modification

Genetical Modification

Biotechnology breakthroughs in plants have created a good prospect to increase the quality of starch. Biogenetic mutations endow starch with unique physicochemical properties.

Applications

  • Modified starch mass production
  • Development of novel technologies for modified starch manufacture
  • Starches with desired modification can serve as food ingredients, pharmaceutical materials, and industrial raw materials
