Characteristics of Enzymatic and Synthetic Carbohydrate Derivatives

Carbohydrate derivatives contain mainly C, H, and O atoms in their structure. Carbohydrate derivatives include monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides. Carbohydrate derivatives of the polysaccharide type are composed of monosaccharides linked by glycosidic bonds. Therefore, the structural diversity of monosaccharides and the stereoselectivity of glycosidic bonds give polysaccharide-type carbohydrate derivatives complex structures. The main principle of enzymatic synthesis of polysaccharide-based carbohydrate derivatives is the synthesis of the target substance by enzyme-catalyzed polymers. This method allows obtaining carbohydrate derivatives with specific functions such as emulsification, solubilization, descaling, and targeted drug delivery. In addition, enzymatic synthesis of carbohydrate derivatives does not pollute the environment, which is in line with the concept of "green chemistry".

Our Technologies

Enzymes have high catalytic activity, are reusable and non-toxic. Moreover, reactions catalyzed by enzymes are highly selective and allow for more precise control of the structure of the product.

CD BioGlyco comprehensively investigates the enzymatic synthesis of complex carbohydrate derivatives. Specifically, it encompasses the following technologies:

  • Enzyme immobilization
  • At CD BioGlyco, we utilize metal chelators to immobilize the enzyme to a specific material and then proceed to catalyze the reaction. This method enhances the stability of the enzyme and enables repeated use of the enzyme.

  • Directed mutagenesis of enzymes
  • To optimize enzyme-catalyzed reactions for the preparation of carbohydrate derivatives, we also offer enzyme mutation techniques. We utilize gene mutation as well as DNA recombination techniques to modify enzymes to get the best catalytic effect.

  • Combination of enzymatic and chemical methods
  • To capitalize on the advantages of the Chemical Synthesis of Complex Carbohydrate Derivatives, we offer a combined chemical-enzymatic technique for the production of carbohydrate derivatives.

There are several different sequences of chemical-enzymatic synthesis reactions:

    • A substrate analog is synthesized through a chemical reaction followed by an enzyme-catalyzed synthesis.
    • The enzyme-catalyzed reaction is followed by chemical diversification.

Synthetic reactions with different sequences are capable of efficiently preparing complex carbohydrate derivatives with branched or grafted structures.
