The Structure of Splitgill Mushroom Beta-Glucan

Splitgill mushroom beta-glucan was first isolated from a non-edible plant-parasitic fungus, Schizophyllum commune. The main chain of the beta-glucan monomer consists of three (1→3) linked glucose, with one glucose unit connected to the middle sugar by (1→6) bond. Its molecular weight is between 100 and 200 kDa. The molecule shows a triple helix conformation in an aqueous solution, similar to lentinan. Schizophyllan is a water-soluble and extracellular polysaccharide. Pharmacologically, the split-gill mushroom is extremely important. It produces the polysaccharide schizophyllan which shows considerable medicinal properties having capable factors for the prevention of several human infirmities.

The biological activity of schizophyllan can be changed and improved by ultrasonic treatment of the molecule.
