Starches Are Used in the Food Industry and Non-food Industry

Starch is a versatile and essential component found in both animal and plant-based foods. Its unique characteristic of converting into various forms without altering its composition makes it valuable for numerous applications. Starch is commonly stored in seeds, roots, and pith of plants. The prevalent method for starch processing involves grinding soaked raw materials to disrupt cell walls, followed by separation through sieving and centrifugation or decantation to obtain starch from its slurry. In the food industry, starch finds extensive use as a gelling agent, thickener, coating, and texture enhancer, contributing to the production of snacks, bread, sauces, and sweeteners. Additionally, non-food industries utilize cassava starch extensively in manufacturing paper, textiles, adhesives, medicines, bioethanol, and various other industrial products. Its versatility and widespread applicability make starch a vital resource in both food and non-food sectors.

Custom Process for Starch Manufacture at CD BioGlyco

Except for the standard process for starch manufacturing, CD BioGlyco also provides custom process services for optimizing starch manufacturing. At CD BioGlyco, our lab optimizes this starch manufacturing process from five steps (sedimentation, milling, decantation, centrifugation, and grating), for each step we use different strategies for starch manufacturing optimization. Our powerful analysis lab also provides quality control services to check throughout the process to ensure the final starch product meets the desired specifications.

  • Sedimentation: Washing the raw material to remove impurities. Allow the starch to settle in water through sedimentation, separating the starch from other components.
  • Milling: The starch-containing slurry is passed through a mill or grinder to break down the starch granules, converting them into a fine powder or slurry for easier processing.
  • Decantation: Transfer the milled slurry to another container and allow it to settle again for further separation of starch from any remaining impurities.
  • Centrifugation: To enhance the separation process, subject the starch sediment to centrifugation. The centrifuge spins rapidly, separating the starch from other particles by their differing densities.
  • Grating: For certain starch sources, like cassava or potatoes, use a grater to obtain a finely grated slurry. This step ensures efficient starch extraction from the raw material.

Besides custom processes, CD BioGlyco also offers Wet-Milling Processes and Dry-Milling Processes for starch manufacturing. On our Carbohydrate Manufacture Platform, Native Starch Manufacture Service, and Modified Starch Manufacture Service are two good choices for our clients to obtain high-quality starches.
