Overview of Carboxymethylation of Starch

Starch is a kind of natural polysaccharide polymer with a wide range of sources and rich content. Because of its low price, it is used in cosmetics, paper and construction industry, food industry, and other fields. To further expand the scope of the application of starch, it is necessary to transform its structure. The Chemical Modification of starch is an effective and efficient method to expand the structure of starch. Among them, carboxymethylation is a kind of modification method with great development potential. the carboxymethyl starch obtained by this method has a more uniform and delicate appearance, lower production cost, good water solubility, solution transparency, emulsification, high viscosity, and thickening.

Our Technologies

  • Carboxymethyl starch production service
  • Carboxymethyl starch is a kind of derivative with excellent properties of natural starch. It is prepared by the reaction of starch and carboxymethylated reagent under alkaline conditions.

At CD BioGlyco, we will prepare carboxymethyl starch through two steps:

    • Puffing: Treating natural starch with alkaline reagent.
    • Etherification: The product of the first step reacts with etherification reagent.

Parallel experiments will be conducted to explore the optimal conditions for the production of carboxymethylated starch (time, temperature, pH). CD BioGlyco yields 300000 tons of carboxymethyl starch per year.

  • Carboxymethylated starch analysis service
  • For the obtained carboxymethylated starch, we provide comprehensive structural and performance testing services.

    • Structural testing
    • At CD BioGlyco, the effective methods for testing the microstructure (including functional group position and molecular weight distribution) of carboxymethylated starch are infrared (IR), ultraviolet-visible (UV), scanning electron microscope (SEM), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), mass spectrometry (MS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).

    • Performance testing
    • Viscosity, solubility, and crystallinity are typical properties of starch, which play a key role in the application range of starch. At CD BioGlyco, we will specifically use a rapid viscosity analyzer, X-single crystal diffractometer to test these properties and analyze the results (the crystallinity test will be combined with the enthalpy change required for the double helix segment of the molecule).

Applications

  • Carboxymethyl starch is applied as a thickener and food additive in food processing.
  • In pharmaceuticals, the production of carboxymethyl starch applies to the development of pharmaceutical disintegrants.
  • In the manufacturing industry, carboxymethyl starch is applied in industrial adhesives.

Advantages

  • We have carboxymethyl starch production services that can help explore the functionality of starch applications.
  • We offer a One-Stop Solution for production and characterization, which greatly improves the efficiency of carboxymethyl starch production.
