Characteristics of Beta-Glucan

Beta-glucan is a polysaccharide formed by D-glucopyranose connected by beta-1,3/1,6 or beta-1,3/1,4 glycosidic bonds, which was first discovered by Dr. Pillemer, and further extracted and isolated by Dr. Diluzio. It has excellent physiological activity, and the special bonding mode and the existence of intramolecular hydrogen bonds result in a helical molecular structure, which is easily recognized by the immune system. Beta-glucan is a dietary fiber with high solubility, high stability, and high viscosity, commonly used in functional food production.

Effect of Beta-Glucan

Beta-glucan can activate macrophages and neutrophils, thus increasing the content of leukin, cytokinin, and special antibodies, and comprehensively stimulating the immune system of the body. The regulation of immune system activation by beta-glucan is quite complex. It stimulates the innate immune system as a foreign substance and is recognized as microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs), which have evolved pattern recognition receptors on immune cells that recognize and interact with MAMPs.
