Characteristics of Etherified Starch

Starch is a kind of renewable resource, which has the advantages of being green, pollution-free, cheap, renewable, and modifiable. Therefore, it has a broad application prospect in industrial production. However, there are some restrictions on the application of raw starch in some fields because of its structural characteristics. Therefore, the modification of starch is an effective means to expand its scope of application. Among them, etherified starch is a kind of derivative obtained by chemical modification of the original starch. The etherified starch has the characteristics of low gelatinization temperature, strong adhesion, and strong flocculation, so the etherified starch is used more widely.

Our Services

Etherification is a Chemical Modification method by which starch reacts with the etherifying agent, and the hydroxyl groups in its structure are replaced by carboxymethyl, hydroxypropyl, or hydroxyethyl to form an ether chain (ROR). At CD BioGlyco, we provide integrated services, including starch separation and extraction, etherification, detection, and structural analysis. CD BioGlyco produces approximately 4-5 tons of ionic and non-ionic etherified starch each year.

  • Detection and structural characterization
    • Determination of linear and branched-chain amylopectin in starch: Dual wavelength method, colorimetric method, and amperometric titration.
    • Particle size and crystal structure of starch: Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray single-crystal diffraction techniques.
  • Property test
  • CD BioGlyco provides a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and rapid viscosity analyzer to analyze the thermal and adhesive properties of starch, respectively.
